The Board of Trustees announced their decision on February 4, 2026, following an extensive search process. Kim, who has served as interim president since July 2025, has already made significant strides in positioning USC as a leader in academic impact, interdisciplinary research, and philanthropic support.
"Beong's leadership has been instrumental in fostering a strong foundation of trust within the Trojan Family," said Suzanne Nora Johnson, Chair of the USC Board of Trustees. "His character, engagement, and respect for all members of our community, along with his courage in decision-making, have been key factors in our unanimous vote of confidence."
Kim's commitment to USC's core mission is evident in his initiatives. He has launched projects like the Presidential Open Dialogue Project and the AI Strategy Committee, creating platforms to address critical 21st-century challenges. Additionally, Kim co-hosted USC's inaugural AI Summit, bringing together students, faculty, and industry leaders to explore AI's impact and ethical considerations.

"Beong's exceptional diplomatic skills and decisive decision-making have preserved USC's academic mission and financial health," said Carmen Nava, USC Trustee.
Kim's personal connection to USC runs deep. As a Los Angeles native, his parents, Korean immigrants, pursued graduate studies at USC, and he himself studied cello and chamber music under renowned professors at the USC Thornton School of Music.
"Playing the cello has taught me the importance of listening, timing, and harmony in achieving excellence. USC operates in a similar way, with exceptional individuals working together towards a shared mission. As president, I aim to orchestrate this collective effort," Kim said.
