UK's Potential Adoption of the Patria 6x6: What You Need to Know (2026)

The UK is taking a closer look at the Patria 6x6 armored vehicle, but a purchase isn't a done deal. This is a multinational project, and the UK is just in the evaluation stage. Let's dive into the details!

In a recent parliamentary response, Defence Minister Luke Pollard confirmed the UK's involvement in the Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) program, which started in December 2025. This initiative, spearheaded by Finland, centers around the Patria 6x6 armored vehicle. Currently, the program is in its assessment phase.

But here's where it gets interesting: The CAVS program kicked off in 2020 with Finland, Estonia, and Latvia. Since then, other European nations have joined the fold. Sweden and Germany came on board in 2022, with Germany becoming a full procurement member in January 2025. Norway and the UK hopped on the bandwagon in September 2025.

Now, what exactly is the Patria 6x6? Also known as the XA-300, it's a wheeled armored personnel carrier designed mainly for transporting troops. However, it's incredibly versatile. The manufacturer offers optional features like amphibious capabilities, enhanced armor, and a range of weapon systems, from machine guns to medium-caliber turrets and even a 120mm turreted mortar. Talk about adaptable!

In January 2025, Babcock UK and Patria teamed up, signing a memorandum of understanding to potentially support the UK Army's needs. This suggests early industrial alignment if the program moves forward. However, no contract has been signed yet, and the Ministry of Defence (MOD) hasn't confirmed the fleet size, roles, or timelines.

The Patria 6x6 has already found favor with several CAVS members. Latvia has ordered over 200 vehicles, with deliveries starting in 2021. Sweden has a massive order for 425 vehicles, known as the Pansarterrängbil 300, with deliveries planned through 2030. Finland also plans to acquire 160 vehicles, following the delivery of pre-series platforms for testing.

A key question is whether the UK will follow suit and invest in this platform. What do you think about the Patria 6x6? Do you believe it would be a valuable asset for the UK Army? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
