Breaking News: Northern Railway Line's Temporary Closure for Major Renovations!
In a recent announcement, the General Manager of Railways, K. Ravindra Pathmapriya, has revealed a crucial update regarding the Northern railway line. This vital transportation route, heavily impacted by Cyclone Ditwah, will undergo temporary closures at specific sections, starting as early as tomorrow (January 19).
Pathmapriya, addressing the media at the Ministry of Transport and Highways in Battaramulla, detailed the upcoming closures. The Mahawa–Anuradhapura section will be inaccessible from January 19, and the Mahawa–Omanthai section will experience a complete shutdown from January 26, facilitating extensive renovation work. Additionally, renovation efforts will commence on the Medawachchiya–Talaimannar line, starting on the same day.
The planned work includes replacing five railway bridges along the Mahawa–Omanthai line and renovating a unique tunnel designed to accommodate the passage of wild elephants. Officials have assured that the project is scheduled for completion before the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year, aiming to restore normal north–south train traffic.
Despite these closures, selected train services will continue to operate during the renovation period. The Pulathisi Intercity Express and Udayadevi trains will resume their journeys from January 20, while the Night Mail train will restart its service to Trincomalee. The Yalrani train will run between Anuradhapura and Kankesanthurai from January 19, and from January 27, it will operate between Omanthai and Kankesanthurai.
But here's where it gets controversial: while the closures are necessary for safety and infrastructure improvements, they will undoubtedly impact the daily commute and travel plans of many.
