Santagiulia Arena, also known as Hockey 1, opened its doors to the public for the first time this past weekend, hosting Italian Cup games. Typically, Olympic test events occur well in advance of the Games, sometimes years before. The men's Olympic hockey tournament is slated for February 11-22, while the women's tournament will run from February 5-19.
However, this weekend's test events at Santagiulia Arena, which will host the majority of the men's hockey tournament, including the medal round games, were delayed due to construction setbacks. Several NHL and NHLPA representatives were on-site to witness the games. Despite some hiccups, including a hole in the ice that required repair during one game, the playing surface received positive reviews.
IIHF president Luc Tardiff expressed his satisfaction with how the ice held up, particularly in the third period of the third game of the day. He stated his group would return home "happy and confident." He further emphasized the importance of ensuring ice quality and player safety, declaring, "There is no reason that NHL will not come."
But here's where it gets controversial... There's still work to be done, including completing the construction of most of the 14 locker rooms. This includes scrapping plans for some concession stands, replacing them with food trucks outside. The rink's seating capacity has also been adjusted, from the originally planned 14,000 to 11,800.

Another significant issue arose last month: the rink was built three feet shorter than NHL regulation, violating the agreement signed with the IOC and IIHF in July. While the NHL and NHLPA expressed disappointment, they don't believe the shorter dimensions will significantly impact the games' quality or safety. The NHL has increased its resources in Milan, including top ice technicians, to provide consultation. League sources have emphasized there is no backup plan or alternative tournament being considered. As one NHL owner put it, "We're pot committed at this point."
