Imagine a world where art and personal stories collide, creating a unique and captivating experience. That's exactly what acclaimed artist Jason Wilsher-Mills MBE has brought to life in Blackpool, and it's a sight to behold!
A Giant Germ Invasion in Blackpool
Wilsher-Mills, a Wakefield-born artist, has transformed the seaside resort with his larger-than-life exhibition, inspired by his own childhood experiences and memories of the Lancashire coast. But here's where it gets controversial... or at least thought-provoking.
The exhibition features vibrant, inflatable germs, a giant figure lounging in a hospital bed, surrounded by oversized plastic soldiers, and a 10-foot sculpture of Blackpool Rock. It's a unique blend of his personal journey with an autoimmune condition, triggered by chickenpox at a young age, and his love for the seaside.
"It's all about mixing my hospital memories with the seaside," Wilsher-Mills explains. And this is the part most people miss: the artist's special connection to Blackpool. You see, his grandmother ran a boarding house there, creating a deep affinity with the resort.
"The seaside is everywhere in these pieces," he adds, "even the lights on the sculptures are reminiscent of seaside fairgrounds."
His artwork, Blackpool Rock, is a direct result of his time spent observing ballroom dancers in the Tower Ballroom. It's a beautiful fusion of his personal story and the iconic Blackpool setting.
Councillor Lynn Williams, the leader of Blackpool Council, praised the exhibit, saying, "Grundy Art Gallery continues its mission to bring world-class art to Blackpool with the wonderful Jason Wilsher-Mills MBE."
