Emma Raducanu has made headlines by reaching her first final since her remarkable victory at the 2021 US Open. The British No. 1 triumphed over Oleksandra Oliynykova with a score of 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 in a challenging semi-final match, securing her spot in the Transylvania Open final in Cluj this Saturday.
This marks an exciting opportunity for Raducanu to capture her first title since that unforgettable moment at Flushing Meadows, where she truly established herself as a formidable player on the WTA Tour.
In a historic twist, two British women will compete in separate WTA Tour finals on the same day for the very first time, as Katie Boulter has also advanced to the final of the Ostrava Open.
However, one pressing question lingers: how will Raducanu's physical and mental state hold up for the final against Sorana Cirstea after battling through one of the most grueling matches of her career? The encounter against Oliynykova was particularly taxing, lasting nearly three hours, during which Raducanu faced off against her opponent's frustrating playing style, which included frequent use of moon balls and slicing tactics. Such strategies left Raducanu physically drained.
"What an incredible match!" Raducanu exclaimed afterward. "I have to give credit to my opponent. She played fantastically and made it immensely challenging to get the ball past her. Just when you think you've outplayed her, the ball is suddenly back on your baseline or sideline. It’s incredibly tough!
What I’m most proud of is how I competed, how I regrouped in the third set, and how I managed the match overall. Honestly, I don't think I could have done it without the unwavering support from everyone around me."
Oliynykova, currently ranked No. 91 in the world, executed her tricky tactics especially well late in the first set after Raducanu had initially broken serve to go ahead 5-4. She managed to break back, but Raducanu remained resilient, claiming another critical break in a lengthy game at 5-5 before serving out the set with relative ease.
Raducanu then broke in the opening game of the second set, raising hopes for a smoother path to victory as she took a 3-1 lead. Yet, Oliynykova refused to relent, turning the tide of the set by winning five consecutive games, leaving Raducanu struggling to counter her unconventional approach.
Despite facing a challenge again in the deciding set, where she fell behind 2-1, Raducanu demonstrated her fierce determination by winning 16 consecutive points, drawing closer to victory. Although she missed two match points while serving against Oliynykova, she ultimately secured the win by holding her serve in the end.
Earlier in the day, Katie Boulter, ranked No. 120 in the world, defeated American Katie Volynets with a decisive score of 6-1, 6-3, earning her place in the Ostrava Open final. Boulter quickly gained the upper hand, breaking serve in both the opening and fifth games to establish a 4-1 lead before taking the first set as Volynets struggled with her serve. Despite Volynets, the world No. 96, managing an early break in the second set, Boulter responded promptly to level the score at 1-1.
Displaying impressive offensive skills, Boulter continued to dominate with powerful shots across the court. Another crucial break in the eighth game put her in a position to serve for the match. Even when she found herself down 0-40, she remained composed, ultimately closing out the match and advancing to her fifth WTA final.
