A chilling discovery near the Hawaiian coast reveals a humpback whale in dire straits, its struggle for survival amplified by a devastating entanglement.
Imagine the awe of spotting majestic humpback whales, only to realize one is ensnared in a nightmare of human debris. This was the stark reality for underwater photographer John Kowitz and his team as they launched a drone to observe two such magnificent creatures. What they witnessed was heartbreaking: hundreds of feet of fishing gear and heavy chains were deeply embedded in one of the whale's skulls, a cruel burden it was forced to drag through the vast ocean.
Despite its evident suffering, the whale was not alone. It had a companion, a silent testament to the bonds of marine life, perhaps offering solace to its distressed friend. "For two and a half hours we took drone photos, topside DSLR photos, and Insta360 underwater footage to capture imagery of the nature of the entanglement in order to provide the NOAA response team with as much information as possible so they could organize a plan effectively," Kowitz shared, highlighting the meticulous documentation process. The team's desire to help was palpable, but they wisely recognized their limitations, lacking the specialized tools and expertise for such a delicate rescue. Their role became one of crucial observation and information gathering, awaiting the arrival of the professional rescue team.
And this is the part most people miss: the sheer dedication and effort involved in these rescues. Once the NOAA response team arrived, they embarked on an arduous, five-hour operation. Their persistence paid off with an incredible outcome: 251 feet of line, 10 feet of chain, and several hooks were successfully removed from the whale. In total, an estimated 320 feet of gear was liberated from the distressed animal. Kowitz explained that a critical asymmetrical cut was made near the whale's mouth, a strategic move designed to allow the remaining line to be easily shaken free once the immense drag was eliminated.
To facilitate the rescue, the NOAA team strategically attached buoys to the entangled line. This clever tactic served to slow the whale down, creating the necessary window for the rescuers to approach and safely cut the lines. Kowitz described this as one of the most successful disentanglement efforts of the season, expressing confidence that the whale would now have a strong chance of survival and a healthy future.
